Alpine mountain tour to the Grimming, the highest free-standing peak in Ausseerland. Ascent via Klachau/Kulm and trail no. 683 with climbing passages, bivouac and unique panorama.

Only suitable for experienced, sure-footed mountaineers with a head for heights. A tour with alpine character, rewarding and challenging at the same time.

The Grimming (2,351 m) towers as a mighty boulder between Ennstal and Ausseerland and is one of the most impressive mountain tours in the region. Even Archduke Johann considered it to be the highest mountain in Styria - in fact, it is the highest freestanding mountain in the region and an eastern spur of the Dachstein massif.

The “easiest” ascent is from Klachau/Kulm via the marked trail no. 683. The start is on a wooded path that steadily gains height. The terrain soon becomes steeper and the forest thins out, while the ground becomes increasingly rocky and gravelly.

The trail leads over the Stribinggraben to the first climbing passage secured by a wire rope. On busy days, increased caution is required here due to the risk of falling rocks.
After climbing through, you reach the Schartenkar, which offers a short breather with a view of the Schartenspitze. This is followed by further alpine passages with climbing sections, scree fields and narrow paths.

After the Prof. Schuy and the Resch Marterl, it is not far to the Toni-Adam-Dr.-Obersteiner-Biwak, a small shelter at around 2,200 m above sea level. From here, it is only a few minutes to the summit cross.

At the highest point, you can enjoy a breathtaking 360° panoramic view of the entire Ausseerland, the Tote Gebirge, the Dachstein, the Niedere Tauern and, on a clear day, far beyond.

The way back is via the same route or - as a more challenging option - via the Multereck on the south side of the Grimming.

Proper backpacking makes many things easier:

pack heavy things first.
The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket.
All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top.
An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!

This mountain tour in Ausseerland is one of the most impressive challenges in the region. Early tour planning and stable weather conditions are crucial.
