This impressive riding route from St. Agatha to Altaussee leads along quiet paths through the Leisling Valley and over the Moosberg directly into the heart of the Ausseerland region – past the traditional Altaussee salt mine and down to the picturesque Lake Altaussee, where cozy places to stop for refreshments await you. Ideal for anyone looking for an intense nature experience on horseback.

The route starts at the Landhotel Agathawirt. After crossing the main road, the riding trail follows the signs to the Halleralm. After about one kilometer, the path branches off to the right into the Leisling Valley. The trail starts off flat but soon climbs steadily. Follow the forest road uphill towards Lupitsch without deviating from the turnoffs. After a sharp bend, the trail meets a road leading up from Lupitsch. Here, the trail turns left and continues along a well-maintained forest road.

The route leads through a quiet moorland area towards Waldgraben. At the next hairpin bend, take the second turn-off on the right and continue uphill to Moosberg. An old tunnel from the Altaussee salt mine lines the path. Once at the top, the route leads down to the right to the so-called “Steinberg.”

Alternatively, you could continue straight ahead, which will take you to the old Bräunerberg tunnel and the Sandling ski slope in the Loser ski area. However, to take the classic route to Altaussee, follow the path to the Kriechbaumberg tunnel.

After a hairpin bend, the trail descends steeply to the entrance of the Steinberg exhibition mine of the Altaussee salt mine. The trail then runs along the road to the next hairpin bend. There, take a steep shortcut straight ahead and then follow the historic salt road directly to the center of Altaussee.

This riding route is suitable for sure-footed horses and experienced riders who appreciate a varied route and magnificent natural panoramas. A perfect combination of riding adventure and cultural experience around equestrian sports.

Horseback riding on approved forest roads and trails is permitted from 8:30 a.m. until two hours before dusk. Game feeders and their immediate surroundings may not be entered, of course. High stands are to be avoided, otherwise only to be passed at a walk. In winter, horseback riding is not allowed on uncleared trails.

Horseback rides may only be completed with a badge. This is available for a fee. All information can be found on the website of the tourist office Ausseerland Salzkammergut.
