Mountain tour on the Traweng

This impressive mountain tour in Ausseerland offers everything that makes a mountaineer's heart beat faster: a challenging climb, spectacular scenery and an incomparable 360-degree panorama. From the summit of the Traweng, the entire alpine environment shows itself from its best side: To the north the rugged limestone peaks of the Totes Gebirge, to the south the mighty Grimming, behind it the striking Dachstein and the broad lines of the Niedere Tauern.

Route description

Start at the mountain station of the 4-seater chairlift or from the parking lot on the Tauplitzalm. Head east across the high plateau, past the small mountain church, which is located near the mountain station.

After the Grazerhütte, where Heinrich Harrer worked as a hut warden in the 1930s, the marked ascent to the Traweng summit begins.

The narrow trail no. 72 is well marked, but soon becomes steep and technically demanding. In a scree gully, it is advisable to use your hands. After around 30 minutes, you reach a flatter section - past a small cave. This is where the particularly scenic passage begins: boulders, karst surfaces and sinkholes line the path. If you wish, you can choose a circular route to the summit here, which offers additional views.

Once at the top, an overwhelming panorama opens up: the Tote Gebirge, the Grimming, the Dachstein massif and the Niedere Tauern spread out before you - a sight that is more than worth the climb.

The descent is via the same route back to the Tauplitzalm.

Emergency reporting tip - provide answers to the six W questions:

• What happened?
• How many injured?
• Where did the accident happen? (possibly GPS coordinates?
• Who is reporting? (callback number)
• When did the accident happen?
• Weather at the accident site?

• pack heavy things first.
• The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket.
• All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top.
• An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
