Josefine the Singer or The People of the Mice
In the Gabillon house in Grundlsee, Johannes Silberschneider reads Franz Kafka's story “Josefine, the Singer or The Mouse Folk” – a multifaceted work about art, community, and the special role of the artist. With his reading, he gives Kafka's language and thought world a special presence. The evening is musically accompanied by Toni Burger, whose sensitive sounds deepen the atmosphere of the narrative moodily.
"Our singer's name is Josefine. Those who have not heard her do not know the power of song." With these words begins the last narrative that Franz Kafka wrote during his lifetime. The text tells of the people of mice and their ambivalent relationship with the singer Josefine, who enriches the monotonous everyday life of the mice with her singing. At the same time, the text reflects on the relationship between artists and the audience, as well as Kafka's own self-understanding as an author and fundamental questions about the significance of art for our societal coexistence, which remain highly relevant today.
