Nightgowns, sleep caps, and masks instead of shirts and pants, as well as a memorable rhythm await the visitors at this year's traditional parade of the "Grundlseer Trommelweiber".
Vivid Traditions & Powerful Drumming
The Drum Women represent the frequent gender swap seen during Carnival. Men, dressed in pure white nightgowns and sleeping caps, initiate their performance on Carnival Monday with deafening noise from large drums and other "instruments."
With their extraordinary appearance and strong drum beats, they have long been one of the highlights of the Ausseer Carnival. "Established men" in women's nightgowns from past centuries wish to chase away winter from the town with drums and trumpets. In earlier times, it was believed that natural forces, such as winter, could be driven away with noise.
The Grundlseer Drum Women parade through Grundlsee on Carnival Monday to the melody of the "Ausseer Carnival March," which is accompanied by a rhythm that can be heard in every corner of the Ausseerland during the three "holy" Carnival days.
