Mountain tour Tauplitz - Gwendlingstein - Hechlstein

This scenic mountain tour in Ausseerland connects two striking peaks around Tauplitz: the Gwendlingstein (1,645 m) and the Hechlstein (1,814 m). The tour offers varied ascents and descents, wonderful panoramic views and a short but challenging climbing passage to the second summit.

A physically demanding tour for sure-footed and experienced hikers.

You start directly in the center of Tauplitz at the church. From there, follow trail no. 6 in an easterly direction. After crossing the bypass road, you pass a small chapel in the direction of Leinsteg. After the bridge, turn right uphill past the Gasteiger and Lurger farms and continue along the asphalt road to the highest farm, Gewessler.

From here, follow the signs to the Gwendlingstein. If you want to reach your destination faster, choose the southern ascent, which is steep and challenging, but also varied. Alternatively, the normal route leads to the summit at a more leisurely pace.

From the Gwendlingstein, continue via the western ascent to the Hechlstein. This section is only recommended for experienced mountain hikers: The path is steep, rocky and partly unsecured. Once you reach the summit, you can enjoy a fantastic view of the Tote Gebirge, the Grimming and the Tauplitzalm.

Trail no. 297 then continues eastwards before descending via the Ernst and Hechl farms. The circular route leads back to the Gewessler and continues along the familiar route back to the center of Tauplitz.

Alternative route

If you prefer a shorter and easier variant, you can descend southwards between Gwendlingstein and Hechlstein to get back to Tauplitz.

• How many injured?
• Where did the accident happen? (possibly GPS coordinates)
• Who is reporting? (callback number)
• When did the accident happen?
• Weather at the accident site?

Proper backpacking makes many things easier:

• pack heavy things first.
• The water bottle should always be handy in a side pocket.
• All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top.
• An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
