Varied hike in Ausseerland via the Tauplitzalm to the 2,116-metre-high Almkogel. The route leads past the Steirersee and Schwarzensee lakes and over the Kampboden to the summit. Impressive panoramas, blooming alpine meadows and clear mountain air make this tour a real treat.

Outside operation hours of the lift you can take the panorama road Tauplitzalm Alpenstraße in order to reach the parking on the Tauplitzalm, where you can start the tour then.

Sufficient parking spaces are available at the valley station of the 4-seater chairlift and at the parking lot on the Tauplitzalm.

This extensive hike in Ausseerland leads through the impressive landscape of the Tauplitzalm, past clear mountain lakes, over alpine pastures, through colorful forests and past wild and romantic gorges. The ascent to the Almkogel (2,116 m) is the highlight of this eventful tour.

Route description

The starting point is the mountain station of the 4-seater chairlift or the parking lot on the Tauplitzalm. From there, head east to the Steirersee lake. A detour to the Steirerseebankerl is worthwhile - the view of the Sturzhahn, which Heinrich Harrer climbed for the first time, is impressive.

The trail continues along the Steirersee to the Schwarzensee. Behind the lake, the hike begins via the Leistalm and a low hilltop to the plateau behind it.

The trail continues over the Kampboden to the turn-off to the Almkogel. Now the path becomes steeper. The ascent to the summit is via the southern slope and takes around 1.5 hours from the junction. From the summit cross at 2,116 meters, there is a breathtaking view of the surrounding hiking area in the Totes Gebirge and the surrounding mountains.

The descent is via the same route back to the Tauplitzalm.

Alternatively, the tour can also be continued to the Gnanitzalm - a variant for experienced hikers with the appropriate stamina.

Proper backpacking makes many things easier: pack heavy things first. The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket. All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top. An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
