The hiking trail leads from the starting point at the birthplace of Herbert Zand in the district of Knoppen first along the main road to Obersdorf, then along a hiking trail to Bad Mitterndorf, from there also along walking trails to Tauplitz. The trail has four stations.

The Archduke had his chamber painters Jakob Alt, Jakob Gauermann and Matthäus Loder capture the beauty of this landscape and striking events during his multiple stays in many watercolors and drawings.These artists were followed by countless others in the following decades up to the present day: Not only painters and sculptors, musicians and composers, but above all poets and writers, but also scientists and scholars.

On the VIA ARTIS (Artists' Paths in Ausseerland) you can follow in the footsteps of some of the artists who, like many others, have made Ausseerland their summer retreat or even their adopted home. Like pearls, the three self-contained artists' paths - the Via Artis Bad Aussee, the Via Artis Altaussee and the Via Artis Grundlsee - are strung together with scenic beauty and memories of the cultural past to form a harmonious whole.

The walk starts in Knoppen at the first stop on the Via Artis Bad Mitterndorf trail, the birthplace of Herbert Zand. From there, follow the road until you reach the former Kuchler inn; turn right here and walk under the Salzkammergut B145 main road.
At the next junction, follow the path to the left towards Bad Mitterndorf. After passing the farmhouses, you’ll come to the Obersdorf Circular Trail; follow the signposts along this trail as far as the Pliem farmstead. Immediately after crossing the bridge, you’ll reach the second stop on the Via Artis Bad Mitterndorf, dedicated to Tom Neuwirth, alias Conchita Wurst.
Follow the footpath through the Laasen nature reserve and moorland to the Eselalm. Here you’ll find the third stop on the Via Artis Bad Mitterndorf, featuring interesting details about winter sports pioneer Viktor Hierzegger.
From the Eselalm, the route continues to the centre of Bad Mitterndorf. Just a few metres past the tourist information office in Bad Mitterndorf, you reach the 4th stop on the Via Artis Bad Mitterndorf, which focuses on the life and work of Hans Fraungruber. From here, it is just a few minutes’ walk to the fifth stop on the Via Artis Bad Mitterndorf in Bad Mitterndorf Spa Park, which is dedicated to the local poet and musician Herbert Grill. The path leads back to the town centre and, at the Reisinger bakery, heads towards the Kochalm. From there, continue towards Rödschitz, where you rejoin the Obersdorf Circular Trail and follow it to the Sonnenalm. Above the Sonnenalm, you reach the sixth stop on the Via Artis Bad Mitterndorf, which is dedicated to Paul Adler, a pioneer of landscape architecture and friend of Archduke Johann. From here, continue along the Obersdorf Circular Trail, past the Maria Kumitz pilgrimage church, until you reach the starting point of the walk.

Proper backpacking makes many things easier:

pack heavy things first.
The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket.
All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top.
An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
