The R19 Salzkammergut Cycle Route is a 46-kilometer-long, varied cycle tour through the Ausseerland region, which is also ideal for families. The cycle route runs largely away from road traffic and offers numerous access points and connections to public transport.

The tour starts at Trautenfels Castle and leads through idyllic Pürgg, on to Tauplitz and along the foot of the Kulm ski jump to the spa town of Bad Mitterndorf. From here, the route continues on flat terrain through the Laasen moorland to Pichl-Kainisch. After the railway crossing, the route turns right towards the fishing center and leads through the Austrian Federal Forestry Office's fish farm.

The cycle path along the Kainischtraun river runs slightly downhill to Unterkainisch, a district of Bad Aussee. From there, it continues to Bad Aussee railway station, where you can join the eastern section of the route towards Lake Hallstatt.

Since May 2026, the R19 has run for just around 400 metres along the main road from Bad Aussee railway station before joining the newly built cycle path over the Koppen Pass and through the picturesque Koppental valley to Obertraun on Lake Hallstatt. At the provincial border, the route continues as the R2 Salzkammergut Cycle Path Upper Austria. A worthwhile detour leads to the Dachstein Giant Ice Cave in Obertraun.

This route is a highlight for leisurely cycle touring, for off-road e-biking and a must for anyone wishing to experience the Ausseerland on two wheels.

Before the ascent over the Klachau, you can see the village of Pürgg, the "Steirische Kripperl", at the top right. A visit is worthwhile.
There is plenty of parking along the entire Salzkammergut Cycle Path.
