Herbal circuit in Gößl

The circular herb trail in Gößl is an educational and varied hike in Ausseerland that is fun for children and adults alike. The botanical diversity of the region is presented in a playful way on the well-signposted circular trail. High-quality folding boards with the question “Do you know this plant?” encourage guessing and provide interesting information about the local flora on the reverse. The aim of the trail is to strengthen the understanding and awareness of nature and landscape in the Salzkammergut.

The starting point of the circular trail is at the parking lot at the diving service in Gößl, directly on Lake Grundlsee. After crossing the road, the wide footpath begins. After about 100 meters, turn right onto a forest road and follow the signpost “Kräuterrundweg” in a clockwise direction.

The route runs slightly uphill along the Stimitzbach stream in an easterly direction. After around one kilometer, the path branches off to the right onto a narrow path that requires surefootedness. At the end of this section, a bench invites you to take a break.

The path continues across a meadow through the sparse edge of the forest, then crosses the Stimitzbach stream via a footbridge. Continue straight ahead, then turn left onto another forest road, where there are numerous information stations on native wild herbs and plant species.

After about one kilometer, the circular trail turns right immediately after a hut. There is a wayside shrine commemorating an avalanche accident in 1738. The path climbs briefly, becomes narrower and leads steeply downhill to the Ranftlmühle, which is dedicated to the painter Matthias Ranftl. Pass the mill, continue on the hiking trail for about 200 meters, turn left and reach the starting point a little later.

• When did the accident happen?
• Weather at the accident site?

Proper backpacking makes many things easier:

• pack heavy things first.
• The water bottle should always be within easy reach in a side pocket.
• All things that are often needed, such as sunglasses, camera or hiking map, belong on top.
• An emergency kit including blister plaster belongs in every backpack and a clothing according to the "onion system" is always recommended!
