Sagtümpel - Tauplitz
Tauplitz
Northeast of Tauplitz, idyllically situated in the forest, is the legendary "Sagtümpel". It is one of the very rarely found in Austria vauclusic giant karst springs, which means that the water from a deep spring lake is pressed up from below.
The water flow varies between 10 l/s and 10 m³/s, with the catchment area of the source primarily encompassing the plateau of Tauplitzalm. Marking attempts have demonstrated a direct connection to the stream infiltration of Lake Kraller, located to the north of Hollhaus. The water overcomes a difference in elevation of over 600 meters over a distance of four kilometers. The water from the source flows to the Tauplitz Waterfall, which plunges into the Grimmingbach with a magnificent 30-meter-high cascade.
Due to the great depth and mysterious appearance of the Sagtümpel, a legend surrounds this magical place.
Unfortunately, the large spring bowl was completely filled with gravel and concreted over in 1975 as part of the water supply. Since the drinking water extraction was stopped in the 2000s, the water supply facility has been abandoned.
The idea for a renaturalization has existed for several years. In the autumn of 2016, renaturalization could begin as part of a LEADER project. All concrete elements were removed and the spring lake was uncovered again using a special excavator. Through the successful renaturalization, an interesting excursion destination was created for summer and winter walks. The Sagtümpel has become a place of luck and strength, making it a popular hiking and outing destination near the village of Tauplitz.
