Ranftlmühle mill

The Ranftlmühle is located in the district of Gößl in the municipality of Grundlsee in Styria. Built in 1850 from wood, it is picturesquely situated by the Stimitzbach, a steeply descending mountain stream, whose name has Slavic origins.

The mill is named after the Viennese painter Johann Matthias Ranftl (1805–1854), who enjoyed spending time at Grundlsee and used the mill as a source of inspiration.

After decades of decay, the Ranftlmühle was extensively restored between 2006 and 2011. Among other things, the mill post, the water wheel, and the roof were renewed.
The renovation work was mostly done by hand, as the narrow access road did not allow the use of heavy machinery. Today, the mill presents itself again in its original condition and is a testament to the traditional craftsmanship of the region.

The Ranftlmühle is reachable via a short walk from Gößl and is located on the way to the Toplitzsee, a popular excursion destination in the Ausseerland.
A visit to the mill can be ideally combined with a hike or the Three Lakes Tour.
