Fishing on Lake Toplitzsee

The Toplitzsee, nestled in the impressive mountain world of the Ausseerland in Styria, is one of the particularly protected fishing areas.

The fishing season runs annually from June 1 to August 31. To protect the ecosystem, the number of daily permits is strongly limited – a maximum of four licenses per day are issued. These are available directly at the Fischerhütte on the west shore of the lake or through the online shop of the Austrian Federal Forests.

Fishing is only permitted during daylight hours.

Permitted methods include fly fishing with a single fly and single hook, as well as spin fishing with lures of all kinds or dead baitfish – with the latter only allowed to come from the Toplitzsee. Trolling is also allowed, but only with a maximum of two rods per person and only one hook per rod.
The daily catch limit is three salmonids. The sale of caught fish is prohibited. Caught pike must be kept.
The minimum sizes (legal sizes) are 30 cm for brook trout and lake char, and 60 cm for lake trout.

As the lake offers little shore access, fishing is almost exclusively done from a rowing boat. Private boats are not allowed; rental boats are available at the Fischerhütte.
Fishing in the nearby Kammersee is expressly prohibited. The main fish species in the Toplitzsee are lake char, brook trout, lake trout, and pike.

Access is via the district of Gößl near Grundlsee, where there are paid parking facilities (May to October). A walking path leads along the Toplitzbach directly to the lake.
Nearby is also the starting point for the popular 3-Lakes-Tour, which connects Grundlsee and Kammersee – the latter, however, without fishing opportunities.

Fishing at the Toplitzsee combines strict nature conservation regulations with a special nature experience – peaceful, exclusive, and in harmony with the unique landscape of the Ausseerland in Styria.
