parade of the "Altaussee Trommelweiber"
The traditional procession of the Altausseer Trommelweiber (lit. "Drum Women"), consisting of ladies and some male musicians, marches together with the carnival parade through the town at the foot of Mount Loser. The memorable rhythm of the noisy Trommelweiber can be heard from afar, and is one of the absolute highlights of the fifth season in the Ausseerland Salzkammergut region.
In fact, the Trommelweiber (lit. "drum women") represent the gender swap that often occurs during Carnival, where in other towns of the Ausseerland region, the men exchange their shirts & pants for white nightgowns, nightcaps, and masks. In Altaussee, however, this tradition of the Ausseer Carnival is quite different - traditionally, it is actually women that perform as "Trommelweiber".
Dressed in nightgowns from past centuries, the drum women want to drive the winter out of the town with drums and trumpets. In earlier times, it was believed that natural forces, such as winter, could be driven away with noise.
The "Trommelweiber" parade through Altaussee on Carnival Monday marches to the melody of the "Ausseer Carnival March", which is supported by a rhythm that can be heard in all corners of the Ausseerland region during the three "holy" Carnival days.
