Carnival parade "Ausseer Arbeittrommelweiner"

Tu., 09.02.2027 from 08:00 o'clock
In Nightgowns & with Drums and Trumpets in Hand!

Traditionally dressed in snowy white nightgowns and nightcaps, men lead their annual procession through Bad Aussee with deafening noise from large drums and other "instruments." The catchy rhythm of the noisy "Arbeitertrommelweiber" (lit. drumming women) can be heard from afar on Shrove Tuesday and is one of the absolute highlights of the fifth season in the Ausseerland region.

Vibrant Tradition & Powerful Drum Beats

The "Trommelweiber" (lit. Drum Women) represent the gender swapping that often occurs during carnival, where in the regions of Ausseerland, the men exchange shirt and trousers for white nightgowns, nightcaps, and masks. Thus, during the time of the Carnival in Ausseerland Salzkammergut, the "Established Manly Figures" can be found in women's nightgowns from past centuries, aiming to drive away winter from Bad Aussee with their drums and trumpets. This long-standing tradition dates back to earlier times when it was believed that natural forces, like winter, could be chased away with noise.

The "Arbeitertrommelweiber" (lit. Working Drum Women) parade through Bad Aussee on Carnival Tuesday to the melody of the  "Ausseer Carnival March" , which is carried by a rhythm that can be heard at every corner of Ausseerland during the three "holy" carnival days. The Drum Women are guided by this rhythm and can be found at different stations along the way. The program and the route can be found under "Frequently Asked Questions".
