Upper Styria is the northeastern region of Styria and THE water region. It is the state in which the mountain springs that provide water for the whole of Vienna and half of Graz have their source. It is the state in which the terms variety, pleasure and recreation mean something; whether it is a nice hike, a mountain tour or a dip in the crystal clear lakes. The choices range from the good old summer holiday to a wide range of winter and summer sports to cultural highlights and "well-being spots" - quite simply, refreshingly natural!
The most famous place is without doubt Mariazell and its basilica. It is by far the most important place of pilgrimage in Austria. Pope Benedict XVI visited the holy place for the first time in 2007.
There are a couple of things that those who visit this part of Styria should not forget: for example, the Erzberg, the imposing Hochschwab Massif or two particular treats: the forest home of the famous poet, Peter Rosegger and the Stuhleck - the first peak in the Alps to have been ascended on skis, a tale that is also recounted at the Winter Sports Museum in Mürzzuschlag.
