Styria's dialectal diversity

The Styrian language

In the green heart of Austria, there are a great many regiolects, original expressions and idioms typical of the country.

Where the old and the new become one

The dialectal diversity of Styria

The diverse regiolects of the federal state of Styria can be traced through history. Their emergence was influenced by the natural division of the regions by their landscapes. In "Upper Styria" there is a very distinct linguistic boundary, namely that between Middle and South Bavarian. For this reason, a person from the Ennstal valley sometimes uses different expressions than someone from Feldbach, for instance.

Of course, the dialects also continue to develop: New terms used by the younger generations are added to the vocabulary, and informal speech has gradually adapted to the standard language. Some terms are slowly disappearing or have already sunken into oblivion.

And yet: Styria's dialectal diversity can still be heard throughout all regions of the green heart of Austria. Many expressions have been preserved and are well and alive to this day. Especially in rural areas, visitors can still hear a variety of old terms and sayings.
