About us
Where the hearts of children and young people beat faster
Welcome to the largest active salt mine in Austria! Here, the approximately two-kilometre-long guided tour route is covered on foot in 90 minutes. The tunnels lead partly through pure rock salt. Highlights of the tour include the Barbara Chapel, built from salt stones, 700 metres deep in the mountain, two miners' slides and a storage room for art treasures from the Second World War. The tour concludes with a light show at the six-million-litre brine lake. During the Second World War, the Nazis hid priceless art treasures, including a great deal of looted art, underground in Altaussee. The new exhibition "The Good Fortune of Art" tells the story of how they were saved from destruction.
