"Via Artis Altaussee"

The Via Artis Altaussee is a varied cultural hiking trail in the Ausseerland region, which runs like a red thread through the charming district of Fischerndorf. Between Loser, Lake Altaussee, and artists' residences, an impressive interplay of nature, art history, and alpine flair unfolds. The trail follows in the footsteps of great personalities who have inspired and shaped the Ausseerland region over decades.

As early as the 19th century, Archduke Johann recognized the beauty of the Ausseerland region. His court painters, such as Jakob Alt and Jakob Gauermann, captured impressive motifs in numerous watercolors and drawings. Later, other artists, poets, and composers joined them, making this unique cultural landscape their retreat.

Route of the Via Artis Altaussee

The hike begins at the first stop on the Via Artis Altaussee (Alois Mayrhuber, Altaussee Literature Museum) in the spa gardens of Altaussee Altaussee spa gardens and then leads right past the primary school to the crossroads at Augstbach. Here, continue left towards Lake Altaussee. Halfway to the lake is the second stop on the Via Artis Altaussee (Friedrich Torberg, Horst K. Jandl). After a few minutes' walk, turn left and follow Brahmsweg to the parish church and continue onto Adrian-Werburg-Promenade.
Here, right by the lake, is the third stop on the Via Artis Altaussee (Arthur Schnitzler) with a view of the water and the surrounding mountains.

The path then continues along the north shore and a few metres after the Altaussee cemetery you will reach the fourth stop on the Via Artis Altaussee (Jakob Wassermann, Marta Karlweiss). Just a few minutes' walk further on, past the snack bar and the popular Kalßeneck bathing spot, the promenade path turns into Arnethweg. This natural path winds its way through the forest, is narrower and somewhat more challenging in places, but always easily passable – sturdy footwear is recommended. After about 1.5 kilometres, you will reach the 5th station of the Via Artis Altaussee (Christl Kerry, Klaus Maria Brandauer).

Those who prefer a shorter route can take a shortcut from Kalvarienberg via the so-called ‘Kleiner Künstlerblick’ back to the parish church and back to the Altaussee spa gardens.

The longer route leads past the old fish farm, along the Augsti Sagenweg trail and down to the access road to the Loser skiing and hiking area. Once you reach Loserstraße, turn left towards the centre of Altaussee. At the Donisbrücke bridge, turn right over the Augstbach stream and then right again, continuing along the old Salzstraße road. After a few metres, turn left and walk past Haus Seeblick and Haus Starl to Friedrich-Torberg-Weg. Here, turn right for a few steps to the 6th station of the Via Artis Altaussee (Hermann Broch). The hike leads back a few metres and continues along Friedrich-Torberg-Weg. After a few minutes' walk, you will reach the 7th station of the Via Artis Altaussee (Barbara Frischmuth) and the 8th station of the Via Artis Altaussee (Charles Wassermann, Erich-Wolfgang Korngold). Continue along Friedrich Torberg-Weg until you reach the Altaussee fire station. Cross the road and turn into Bruno Brehmweg. Shortly afterwards, you will find the 9th station of the Via Artis Altaussee (Bruno Brehm). The path continues to the Hotel Seevilla and the 10th station of the Via Artis Altaussee (Johannes Brahms).

After this last station at the Hotel Seevilla, follow the promenade to Walter Munk Park and then walk back to the spa gardens of Altaussee via the Wiesenweg.
