Variety-rich winter walk from the plateau of Rohrmoos to Schladming via the village of Untertal.

This variety-rich hike leads from the idyllic countryside of Rohrmoos to the mountain town of Schladming. Warm, friendly inns and restaurants invite you to step inside and warm-up yourself next to a traditional Styrian tile stove. It is not the shortest, but it is definitely one of the most enchanting opportunities to make your way on foot from Rohrmoos to Schladming.

From Schladming take provincial highway L722 (Rohrmoosstraße road) to Rohrmoos and at the roundabout continue straight on to the village center of Rohrmoos (about 300 m from the roundabout).
Parking is available in the village center and immediately after the roundabout on the right side of the road.

From the valley terminal of Gipfelbahn Hochwurzen cable-car take the footpath dowhill to the so-called Schussbühel . Here you make a right and walk across a magically beautiful area known as the “Rohrmooser Frei” and past the valley terminal of the Obertalbahn cable-car. Soon after you reach the junction of “Rohrmoos-Südweg” road and “Knappenweg” road - the latter is the one you follow.

Before entering the forest at Holzbacher farm, you branch off left again, where the path takes you downhill across a meadow to the Ahornweg road. Make a left here and follow the road out of the valley until you reach the Tälerstraße road. Follow the footpath alongside the road, until you reach the village of Untertal. Just 100 m ahead you can warm-up yourself at Landalm Inn.

Once you reach the village of Untertal make a left onto “Lindenweg” road and then follow the trail through Talbachklamm gorge to Schladming. The wide footpath runs close at the banks of the Talbach creek.

The Talbachklamm is especially enchanting in winter due to its bizarre ice formations and trees and bushes covered with hoar frost. However, because it is close to the Talbach, the path is often icy. Therefore we recommend being particularly cautious on this path, as well as wearing suitable boots or shoes with spikes. After about 2.5 km from the fire station in Untertal, you will reach the town of Schladming close to the Protestant church.

Along the trail through Talbachklamm gorge there are sections without guard railing.

In winter, caution is advised even on seemingly easy hikes. In shady areas, the ground can be slightly icy, and there may be avalanche danger below slopes. Mountaineering is therefore primarily a matter of personal responsibility – even more so in winter. Tourist associations and avalanche warning services assume no liability whatsoever based on the information provided.

Your equipment should ideally include:

Ankle-high, warm shoes. Waterproof, warm shoes with a treaded sole are ideal. Optional: Gaiters for additional snow protection.
A hood and warm clothing, ideally layered. Don't forget a change of clothes for longer winter hikes: a wind and waterproof jacket and trousers.
A small backpack with a warm drink in a thermos and snacks as needed

Optional: crampons/snow spikes (snow chains for shoes), telescopic hiking poles for better grip and balance.

Talbachklamm gorge is illuminated until midnight.
