With a suitcase and 800 dollars in his pocket, Josef Erich "Joe" Zawinul traveled by train and ship to the USA in 1959. His musical career began that very evening and took him through Ella Fitzgerald, Maynard
Ferguson, and Dinah Washington to Cannonball Adderley, for whom he composed nearly 60 pieces for his quintet from 1961 to 1970. The albums MONEY IN THE POCKET and MERCY, MERCY, MERCY (1966) are considered reference recordings of Soul Jazz.
