Grimming
When entering the Ennstal Valley eastwards, you can't help but pass him. The Grimming obviously dominates the scenery and seperates the "Hinterbergers" from the "Ennstalers". And still, both lie at its feet.
Possibly due to its sudden 1,700-metre rise from the Enns Valley, the Grimming was once referred to as Mons Styriae altissimus – the highest mountain of Steiermark. Its summit reaches 2,351 metres above sea level and can be accessed via several routes. However, all ascents are rated difficult, requiring surefootedness, a head for heights, and experience in alpine terrain. The Grimming is composed of Dachstein limestone and is part of the Dachstein Massif.
On the southern side of the Hoher Grimming, at around 1,630 metres, you'll find a striking rock formation: the Grimming Gate (Grimmingtor) – a 50-metre-high, 15-metre-wide recess in the rock wall, framed by a 10-metre-thick overhanging ledge. The Grimming is surrounded by numerous legends, many of which centre on the Grimming Gate and the treasures said to lie hidden behind it.
