Opening of the exhibition "KeraMik"
The exhibition WOOD & SALT from Ausseerland and Hinterbergertal at the Kammerhofmuseum illustrates how closely the history of the Styrian Salzkammergut is connected to the salt industry and the use of forests. Picture panels and demonstration objects make this transformation tangible.
The forestry cultural journey through the Styrian Salzkammergut takes visitors on an exciting time travel through several centuries of forest and settlement history. It becomes clear how closely the development of the region around Aussee was connected to the salt industry. This is also well illustrated along the historic salt road Via Salis. The settlement of the valleys, the creation of transport routes, and the economic significance of the Salzkammergut were significantly shaped by the extraction and processing of salt.
The focus is on the forest as an energy supplier. To produce the "white gold" of the Habsburgs, huge amounts of firewood were required. Especially the so-called "Schwarzholz," which was obtained from spruce and fir trees, was used to heat the salt pans of the salt works.
The exhibition impressively shows how the increasing demand for wood necessitated new forestry management methods, thereby laying the foundations for sustainable forestry. Thus, the history of the Styrian Salzkammergut is experienced as a fascinating interplay of nature, human labor, and economic development.
