Enjoy nature, relax and stay a while – it is the most beautiful way to discover Styria. The diversity of the country can be seen while hiking: whether the rugged mountains in the north or the gentle wine country in the south.

Aiming High

Touch the summit cross, make an entry in the summit register, take a sip out of your thermos and enjoy the great view of the country - conquering a summit is an unforgettable experience. A highlight in Styria is climbing the Dachstein in the northwest of the country, which at nearly 3,000 metres is the highest point in Styria. From there you can see over to the Grimming, the highest freestanding mountain in Europe at a height of 2,351 m. You can also see the High Tauern mountain range and all the way to Slovenia and the Czech Republic. The feeling of conquering the Dachstein is all the loftier. The high peaks that bear such impressive names as Hochschwab, Stoderzinken or Rax meander to the east of Upper Styria.

One day is not enough – long-distance hiking in Styria

Those who want to experience the magic of nature and the magnificent mountain world extensively should set out on one of the many attractive long-distance trails in Styria.

  • Above all: the long-distance path "From the Glacier to Wine". A total of 60 stages, divided into a northern route (35 stages) and southern route (25 stages), offers everything the hiking heart desires.

Hiking hotels
If you are on your feet all day, you need special care. The hiking hotels of Styria have specialised in this. Nearly 40 accommodation properties in a gorgeous and wonderful setting offer everything hikers need. Special advice on tours, guided hikes, hiking taxis and much more. And for recovery after a strenuous day of hiking, the sauna and steam bath are heated and massages are offered before then heading to an enjoyable dinner.

Hiking in the realm of water

If the temperatures are rising, roaring streams and rushing rivers along the hiking trail offer a wonderful opportunity to cool off. With more than 300 mountain lakes in the Lower Tauern, Styria is an absolute realm of water. Whether glacier runoff such as the "wild water" in Rohrmoos - Untertal, bubbling springs such as the Palfauer Wasserlochklamm [gorge] in the Gesäuse or falling water such as the Bärenschützklamm [gorge] in Mixnitz. In Styria, hiking can be combined with a cool-off anywhere.
