Route to the Stolzalpe summit

Open
This particularly rewarding hike runs from the district town of Murau up to the summit of the Stolzalpe.
The Stolzalpe lies north of Murau and is one of the most climactically favoured regions in Styria. A municipality by the same name sits on the sunny south-facing slopes, home to the well-known general and orthopaedic state hospital Murtal Standort Stolzalpe. If you have time, visit the Gesundheitswerkstätte (Health Factory) at the state hospital - Haus II, which has a beautifully designed flight of steps leading up to it. Then it's on up to the summit through forestland. Stop for a break at the wooden summit chapel with sandstone cross before reaching the summit cross. This is where you will find the summit register, where you can record your mountain victory for posterity.

More information

Coming from Judenburg via Unzmarkt to Scheifling. Turn right here in the direction of Murau. In Murau, after the second traffic circle, the WM Halle is located on the left side.

Coming from Murau via Ranten (or Stadl an der Mur), drive straight on to Murau. The WM Halle is located after the double traffic circle on the left side.

From the starting point of the WM-Halle Murau you march about 100m westwards to the pedestrian traffic light, here you cross the main road. Pass the Billa entrance on the right. After about 50m follow the signs 938 direction Stolzalpe uphill. From 1.060m to the church (1.204m) you have to walk along the road a few times until you reach the nicely laid out stairway to the LKH/Haus II (1.296m). The trail then continues on a gravel road to the Fernerhütte (not managed, 1,445m). The marked hiking trail in this area is also designated as a Styrian circular hiking trail and long-distance hiking trail 909. From the Fernerhütte, the hiking trail and forest path alternate several times. The last short steep section leads to the 1,810m Franz-Kerda hut with the chapel and summit book. Nevertheless, you have not yet reached the actual summit. This one reaches after two small counter ascents in approx. 5 minutes (1.817m).

The way back follows the route already known from the outward journey.

The summit register is not located at the summit cross, but in the chapel about five minutes' walk below the peak.
