Travel to your holiday destination and move around Styria entirely without stress and traffic jams. When travelling by train, your holiday gets underway during the journey. The countless train connections from Europe are a cost-efficient, fast and relaxed way to get to the Mur Cycling Path. For more information about the connections of the ÖBB [Austrian Federal Railways], contact the call centre of Austrian Federal Railways at Tel. +43 5 1717. The Cyclists' Hotline in Germany can be reached at +49 1805 151415.
Tip: For all guests from Germany, the Europe special ticket starts at € 39.00.
Bikes and trains are a great combination on the Mur Cycling path. Bikes can be taken on the trains of the three Styrian rail companies. Please note, however, that space is limited. For more information about bike transport, click here:
Within Styria, the cyclist tickets of the Verbundlinie [Network Line], a consortium of Styrian mobility providers, are an ideal combination for all cyclists. These special tickets, which were developed specifically for cycle tourists and day-trippers, offer a comprehensive service for travel within Styria. You can find details here. With over 70 railway stations along the Mur Cycling Path, there's nothing to get in the way of combining trains and bikes. Detailed information about these connections, including information about bicycle transport, can be obtained from Mobil Zentral, the service centre for public transport in Styria.
You must reserve a place for your bicycle for long-distance transport (Railjet, Intercity, Eurocity and Nightjet). The online reservation costs EUR 3.00. With the ÖBB customer service on +43 (0)5 1717 and at the ÖBB ticket counter you will pay EUR 3.50 for your bike. Please note: bicycles with a tyre size of at least 29 inches, tandem bicycles, recumbent bicycles and bicycle trailers can only be transported in special luggage compartments. Online reservations cannot be made for these. In order to guarantee the best possible sequence of events, please note that the trains do not stop for very long. So please find out in advance about the location of the bicycle coach and please take luggage (e.g. panniers) off your bike in due time before the train arrives. In the case of rail replacement transport at short notice, the ÖBB hopes you can understand that no bicycles can be taken on the buses.
Transfer, including bicycles, from Salzburg to the Lungau - There are four possibilities here:
- A Postbus with the ability to take your bike runs from Monday - Friday (workdays) from Salzburg railway station to Tamsweg in the Lungau region. For detailed information about the timetable and the necessary registration in advance, please contact the Postbus office in Tamsweg on tel. +43 6474 2213. There is space for a maximum of 5 bikes!
- Transfer with Bacher Travel: Detailed inquiries on tel. +43 6477 8111. Also performs transfers, for example from Munich or Klagenfurt.
- Take the train from Bischofshofen and Leoben to Unzmarkt and continue with the Mur Valley Railway to Tamsweg You can find details here (warning: several changes necessary!)
- You start with a bike ride on the Tauern Cycling Path from Salzburg to Radstadt, and then take a bus to Mauterndorf in the Lungau region: On the Tauern Cycling Path, you cycle 3 km to Pfarrwerfen (3 km north of Bischofshofen). Here you branch from the Tauern Cycling Path (altitude 545 m) onto the B 99 and cycle on this for 15 km through Fritztal to Eben (860 m) - the federal highway has relatively little traffic here, since the Tauern motorway runs parallel to this up on the mountain. From Eben, it is another 2 km to the Enns where you meet the Enns Cycling Path where you can easily cycle to Radstadt. Here branch off to the south on the Taurachtal Cycling Path and ride 11 km to Untertauern (1,010 m). From here it's another 11 kilometres and a challenging 730 metres in altitude difference on the federal road (without bike path) to Obertauern / Tauern Pass (1,738 m). However, the subsequent 17 km descent to Mauterndorf and then on the bike path "Mitterberg Loop" to the Mur Cycling Path at St. Michael in the Lungau is a delight. Alternatively, the transfer from Radstadt to Mauterndorf (or Obertauern) with the bus line no. 780 is an option where it is easy to take your bike with you.
