Stage 11 From Glacier to Wine North Route Gesäuse Heßhütte - Radmer

Closed
The tour takes us from one of the most popular huts in the Gesäuse via the beautifully situated Sulzkaralm to Radmer, a small side valley nestled between the Gesäuse and the Eisenerz Alps. The Lugauer, the local mountain of the small village in the middle of this wild and at the same time romantic nature, is also called the "Styrian Matterhorn" by the locals because of its steep rock faces. This imposing peak is bypassed on our route in the west to reach the idyllic Radmertal via the Gspitzten Stein.
Right at the beginning, the Sulzkar awaits us with one of the most beautiful alpine pastures in the Gesäuse and a special feature, the Sulzkarsee, because this is the only lake in the Gesäuse National Park. It is characterized by its strong water fluctuations. The lake gets its water partly from underground springs, partly from surface water during heavy precipitation. However, the visit to the alp and the lake of the same name must first be earned by crossing the Sulzkarhund.

More information

Detaillierte Informationen zur Anreise finden Sie hier.

We start at our stage destination of the 10th stage of the hiking route "From glacier to wine", the Heßhütte (Tel. +43 664 4308060), and walk a short distance of this 10th stage back to the crossroads at the Gamsbrunnquelle. Here we keep to the left, where it goes up to the Sulzkarhund, which is the transition to the Sulzkaralm with its lovingly situated hut in the middle of the alpine pasture (Tel. +43 664 8660904). Note: The hut is only open on weekends from late June to early September!

The imposing views that reveal themselves to us here make us pause on the one hand and on the other hand they make us want to continue on our way at the same time. From here we continue downhill for the next kilometers across the alpine landscape with the idyllic Sulzkarsee into the Hartelsgraben. Here we keep to the right in order to continue slightly uphill via trail no. 665 and the Haselkar to the Gspitzten Stein. Afterwards, the trail goes steeply downhill to Radmer an der Hasel (Tourist Information Tel. +43 3635 2110) with the beautifully situated Greifenberg Castle. From here it is about 3 km to the stage destination, the inn "Zum Erzberg". In the small village of Radmer an der Hasel, in the midst of the imposing mountain world of the Eisenerz Alps, a true speciality awaits us: the copper mine (Tel. +43 3635 20030 or +43 676 7106622) houses the smallest tunnel railroad in Austria. Through years of painstaking manual labor, a part of that Radmer mining history that ended 150 years ago and shaped the valley for almost 3,000 years has been awakened from its slumber. By the way, even more mining history awaits us on the next stage to Eisenerz with its ore mine.
