Naturpark Sölktäler

Nature park: worthy of preservation

Far away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, the Sölktäler are the ideal place to find peace and recharge your batteries. There are no crowds here, not even cable cars, but lonely alpine pastures, magnificent peaks and crystal-clear water. Take a deep breath and enjoy the freshness of the air, experience the original beauty of this region. Finally a holiday, finally arriving - finally peace.

Nature Park since 1983 - Nature Park of the Year 1997 - total area of 288 km² - many still traditionally managed alpine pastures with milk processing - many peaks over 2,000 metres - endless mountain lakes and waterfalls bring 24 hours of relaxation per day.

The Sölktäler Nature Park is located in the Niedere Tauern. The Großsölktal leads to the Sölkpass, the highest Styrian pass at almost 1800m. In the Kleinsölk, the idyllic Schwarzensee is the destination of many hikes. The special feature of the nature park is the many inclusions of white marble in the crystalline rock. Therefore, the flora here is particularly lush and species-rich. Both plants that need crystalline subsoil and lime-loving plants occur together in a very small area. Over the centuries, traditional alpine farming has pushed down the forest line. Alpine pastures and the alpine habitats above them are also the defining landscape types of the nature park. Only far down in the area of the valley entrances is the climate mild enough for fruit trees to grow well. The fauna has also adapted to the altitude distribution between about 700 m (Stein an der Enns) and the highest alpine peaks (Knallstein at 2599 m). The black grouse, whose habitat is around the timberline, is the leading species of the small-structured alpine pastures. Besides the "usual" alpine cloven-hoofed game species, there is even a small colony of rock deer.

Because of the many special animal and plant species and sensitive habitats, large parts of the Niedere Tauern have been designated as a European protected area. The special task in this area: Maintaining a favourable conservation status for the many protected species specially designated here.
