Snowshoe hike to the Roßbachkogel, 1848 m

Open
An advanced snowshoe hike on the Gleinalpe - large summit cross on the Roßbachkogel and the church at the Gleinalmsattel included!
Climbs over gently rising forest roads are usually very popular with snowshoe hikers. The wide paths are easily visible under the snow cover and the moderate gradient is equally soothing for body and mind. The entire ascent up to the Roßbachalm is even and moderate, before the climb, on the wide ridges of the Roßbachkogel, becomes somewhat steeper. The 1000 meters in altitude are worth it, as you feel an indescribable sense of vastness and solitude on the wide expanses of the Gleinalpe. The wide ridges literally invite you to go snowshoeing, although this terrain is only recommended in good visibility and you should also be familiar with digital orientation aids. Due to the snow cover, there are few or often no markings and the course of the trail is difficult to see. The descent from the Roßbachkogel to the Gleinalmsattel is technically more demanding, therefore the tour was also rated difficult.

By car to snowshoeing - a few things to watch out for!

Good winter tires are an absolute MUST!Ice scraper, snow broom, de-icer for the door locks and a small shovel are part of the basic equipment.Put snow chains and a tow rope in the car, even if you are not good with them yourself. Helping and knowledgeable hikers are always available on the mountain!Clear the car completely of snow and ice, especially sweep off the roof of the car completely. When parking, make sure you leave room for other motorists.Always park so that the rest of the roadway remains clear for cars, logging trucks, and snow removal vehicles.Find out about the snow situation on the access road or parking facilities before setting off. (hut host, webcams)

At the crossing Stanglhütte (1), 1026 m, a forest road leads in the direction of Gleinalm-Schutzhaus or Roßbachkogel. We stay on the forest road for the next 1.3 km, which leads along the stream, slightly uphill to a road junction (2), 1083m. Here we branch off to the right in the direction of Zeißmannhütte and keep along the road, which now leads into the Poiersbach ditch. We always stay on the road and do NOT follow the summer path, but walk comfortably uphill in long serpentines. Since we are partly on an unmarked path, we always make sure to stay on the left side of the ditch until we cross the stream after about 5.2 km and an altitude of 1482 m and shortly thereafter see the upper entrance to the summer trail, which can be recognized by the red-white-red markings. Note: The summer trail leads directly along the ditch. Opposite the entrance, we hike left slightly uphill and subsequently reach the saddle on the Roßbachalm (4), 1555 m, where numerous yellow signposts serve as orientation. Our path now turns left in the direction of Roßbachkogel. We stay on the ridge and hike quite comfortably uphill for the time being and then slightly downhill along a fence before the ascent to the broad ridge of the Roßbachkogel begins. For this traverse, good visibility must be assumed, as we are in forest-free terrain and only a few or sometimes no markings are visible. First we go uphill in a line and then keep slightly to the left until we reach the wide mountain ridge, which we now follow. At an altitude of about 1800 m, it goes almost flat for a long time, or slightly uphill, until we reach the Roßbachkogel (5), 1848 m, with a large summit cross. The first part of the descent from the summit towards the north to the Gleinalmsattel is steep. We orient ourselves by the fence, downhill and further along the ridge. Attention. Here in winter there are hardly any markings visible, so always along the fence and when it ends and leads down to the right we go left and look for a line through the forest to the Gleinalmsattel (6), 1586m. At the Gleinalmsattel we keep to the left and walk along the ditch, on paths and forest roads downhill until we reach the road junction (2), 1083 m, again and now take the path we already know back to the starting point.
If you only want to hike to the Gleinalmsattel, you can have it much shorter and easier via the ditch of the Gleinbach - see snowshoe hike to the Gleinalmsattel.
