Where the Riesling is at home.
The Sausal Wine Route has its starting point in the wine town of Leibnitz, first leads along the southern slopes of the Sausal wine-growing region through the Sulm Valley, branches off in Fresing through the mixed forest to Kitzeck - with the highest vineyards in Austria.
From Kitzeck, the road continues to Demmerkogel, the highest elevation of the Sausal, southward over the Sausalerberg to Maierhof in the Sulmtal. And just as the vine sprouts its vines, so does the branching out on the wine road. Many branch-offs and side roads grant you the most varied views of the countryside and deep insights into what our farms have to offer.
It is the idyll away from the big tourist streams, the lived tradition and the most magnificent views of the southern Styrian wine hill country that make the Sausal Wine Road worth experiencing. As is the Styrian custom, the best specialties of the region are served to the guest here. The diversity is also noticeable here, as there is everything from top gastronomy with an international orientation based on regional products to down-to-earth country inns.
However, it is the wine that sets the pace. The Sausal Wine Road winds through the steepest vineyards in Styria. The work of the winegrowers is arduous, but their wines are fresh and fruity. All the good drops are connected with the history of the earth, as the soil here is shaped by slate and primary rock that is around 60 million years old. You can feel this in the wines and fall into raptures over the high quality of the Sausal grape juices. Like the Riesling, for example, which thrives here in unique quality and is considered the trademark of the Sausal region. This whets the appetite, which is satisfied in the Buschenschenken with regional products. The hospitality of the people and the efforts of the wineries underline the emotional impressions that one takes in on the Sausal Wine Route.
A large number of natural viewpoints show impressive pictures of this picturesque landscape. Whether by car, by bike or on foot, the unspoiled cultural landscape reflects the warmth of the region. Just as it has always been the custom with us.
