Small Raabklamm, Mortantsch

Open

Experience a nature jewel up close. Discover the small Raabklamm gorge with all its facets. A perfect hiking trail for the whole family.

The small Raabklamm gorge stretches downstream from the former Jägerwirt inn in Mortantsch to Oberdorf. It is not only a unique recreational area with great adventure value for people, but also an idyllic natural oasis.

In the middle section of the gorge, you can make a detour to Bärental and from there march on to the district capital Weiz.

The small Raabklamm gorge is a very popular excursion destination, especially for families with children. Along the Raab river there are several places where children can experience nature in their own way and jump into the water on the sandbanks of the riverbank.

The small Raabklamm gorge from the Jägerwirt inn to Oberdorf is about 5km and can be extended by another 2km by hiking to Mitterdorf an der Raab.

More information

The district capital of Weiz is located in eastern Styria and is very easy to reach via the A2 motorway from Vienna (approx. 2 hrs) and Graz (approx. 30 min).
  • Arrival from Vienna and from Graz:

On the A2 coming from Vienna and from Graz, take motorway exit 161 / Gleisdorf West in the direction of B54/B64. Follow the B65 / Gleisdorfer Bundesstraße until you reach the B54 / Wechselbundesstraße. At the roundabout, take the second exit north to the B64 / Rechberg-Bundesstraße. After approx. 15 km you will reach the town of Weiz. If you would like to enter the Kleine Raabklamm in Oberdorf, take the B72 in the direction of Graz for about 5 km until you reach Oberdorf near Mitterorf an der Raab. If you would like to get on at Gasthof Jägerwirt or Stoffmühle, please drive from Weizer Hauplatz approx. 6 km on Grazer Straßer in the direction of Graz to Gasthof Jägerwirt or Stoffmühle.

Route planner

  • Our hiking route begins at the former Jägerwirt inn in Mortantsch. From there, after a few metres, we head south to the left up to the Saurucken. This is the only ascent on the hike through the small Raabklamm gorge.
  • After about 300 m, we then go back down to the right along the road towards the river. Through a beautiful forest and along a field we hike parallel to the Raab for about 1.2 km until we come to the Stoffmühle, where there is a large free car park and a popular entry point.
  • From there we continue on easy paths along the course of the river until we reach the Wünschbach bridge after about 2.5 km. There we can turn left and march through the Bärental valley into the town of Weiz, or continue straight ahead through the small Raabklamm gorge.
  • Just one kilometre further on, we reach Oberdorf and thus the end of the gorge. Here we also find a free car park and a popular entry point.

Pack a picnic basket and linger at one of the great spots along the Raab and enjoy nature. When the temperatures are warm, there are plenty of places to cool off and splash around.

Timetables and travel information can be found at Österreichische Bundesbahnen (ÖBB) or at Verkehrsauskunft Verbundlinie.

For local transportation we recommend the SAM-Sammeltaxi Oststeiermark.

Free parking is available at Gasthof Jägerwirt, the municipal office in Mitterdorf, in Oberdorf and at the Stoffmühle.
