Snowshoe hike Turneralm and Hirschkreuz

Open
Relax on snowshoes in the forest on the ups and downs of the Gaberl.
If the Gaberl is a hive of activity and you want to get away from the well-known winter hiking and snowshoe routes, then the tour to the Hirschkreuz is just the thing. The paths do not require excessive attention - especially if there are already tracks - and you can devote yourself to contemplating nature and the view. The snowshoe hike to the Hirschkreuz is not spectacular - it leads through the winter-white forest with little difference in altitude and gentle ups and downs. Here and there, the view of the Steinplan and the valley is unobstructed. The Styrian foothills with their gentle, rounded shapes have a special charm in every season. We can hear the snow crunching under our feet, feel our heart beating, take a deep breath and everyday life recedes into the distance... There is power in silence.

Snowshoeing by car - a few things to look out for!

  • Good winter tires are an absolute MUST!
  • Ice scraper, snow broom, de-icer for the door locks and a small shovel are part of the basic equipment.
  • Put snow chains and a tow rope in the car, even if you are not good with them yourself. There are always helpful and knowledgeable hikers on the mountain!
  • Clear all snow and ice from the car, especially the roof.
  • When parking, make sure that you also leave space for other drivers.
  • Always park in such a way that the rest of the road remains clear for cars, timber trucks and snow clearing vehicles.
  • Find out about the snow situation on the access road or parking facilities before setting off. (Hüttenwirt, webcams)
We start at the car park at Gaberl (1), 1547 m, and immediately turn right at Gasthof Lipp in the direction of Stierkreuz / Oskar-Schauer-Haus. In a clearing we can soon see the Steinplan - Knittelfeld's local mountain - to the north. The markings visible shortly afterwards show us our path 505, which we now follow through the forest. At the Marterl (2), 1574 m, there is another wonderful view of the alpine pastures around the Steinplan. We continue to follow the markings, which are not always easy to see. After approx. 1.3 km on a forest road evenly downhill, you have to pay attention to the markings and a signpost (not clearly visible), which shows the way into the forest on the right. Continue on a path and then on a forest road until you see a junction (3), 1473 m, on the left uphill. Now continue uphill and you will soon reach the Turneralpe, 1500 metres. The hiking trail now continues in the direction of Steinplan, but we walk uphill to the right along the fence and in a short time we can already see the summit cross of our destination, the Hirschkreuz (4), 1556 m. We return to our starting point along the path we came on.
If you would like to make a crossing, you can continue this hike over the Steinplan and on to Kleinlobming.
There is no public transport connection to the starting point of the tour itself.
