Discover the taste of Murau

The cuisine of the Murau region

Enjoy good food and discover local specialities during a “journey of good taste” through the Murau region! From a traditional Brettljause snack platter to an exquisite dinner, from beer to Styrian cheese – the region is full of delicacies. Of course, all of them are served with a side of typical Styrian hospitality.

Eating out in the Murau region

The restaurants, inns, mountain huts and fine-dining restaurants of the Murau region serve a vast selection of delicacies, always with a side of authentic hospitality.

At the region’s many mountain huts, avid hikers enjoy splendid views of the Murau mountain world alongside local treats such as a traditional Brettljause snack platter with typical Murtaler Steierkäse cheese. Also don’t miss the irresistible traditional desserts such as Kaiserschmarren or Buchteln.

If you’re looking for haute cuisine highlights, we recommend visiting one of the region’s three fine-dining restaurants. All of them serve multi-course gourmet menus prepared with mostly regional ingredients.

  • Surrounded by Nature Park Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen, you can enjoy contemporary cuisine and traditional Styrian food at the charming outdoor dining area of Knappenwirt. Wine lovers get the chance to sample fine wines at the restaurant’s own wine cellar.
  • Whether it’s meat produced by local farmers, fish from the local fish farm, vegetables or fruit straight from Grandma’s garden – fine dining restaurant “philipp“ at Turracher Höhe is all about extra fresh ingredients.
  • Gasthaus Bergmann in Turrach is a great choice for meat and fish lovers. Their venison comes from their own hunting, their fish from a regional partner in Sirnitz.

Good to know: In addition to their outstanding cuisine, some inns and restaurants also offer rooms for the night. This way you can enjoy a good night’s sleep right after your exquisite dinner.

Our tip for food lovers: the Slow Food at Hotel Landsitz Pichlschloss! Less is more – true to this principle, guests enjoy products from the hotel’s own slow-food agriculture and fish farming. The castle’s owners, Katrin and Matthias Heindl, make a point of their dishes being prepared as sustainably and naturally as possible.

At the heart of regional cuisine

Refreshing beer, aromatic cheese, fresh fish, tender lamb and venison, sweet honey – the region’s delicacies are produced in harmony with nature. The sustainable production processes are ensured by various quality seals and certificates.

  • Murau brewery leads by example: Since 2016, they have been brewing their beer in a CO2-neutral manner. What’s more, their EMAS certification ensures a resource-friendly operation.
  • Organic farms such as Schafbauernhof Rodler at Nature Park Zirbitzkogel-Grebenzen ensure the preservation of mountain pastures by Alpine pasturing.

The result: culinary delights produced in the region, cherished by chefs and guests alike! A pleasurable stroll across a farmers’ market, through a manufactory or a farm shop is an experience you shouldn’t miss!

A sparkling excursion tip: There’s a lot to see and do at the “Brewery of the Senses“. Join a journey through the history of Murau beer culture and sample delicious beer specialities at the show brewery!
