The history of the spinning room
At the Stoinhof in Kapellen, the Spinnrunde Kapellen was built in 1977 at the request of the then Styrian Sheep Breeding Association Chairman, Economist Bertram Deininger.
Sheep wool was hardly for sale at the time, so a couple of women took their spinning wheels from the attic and began to revive this old - almost forgotten craft. The spun wool was processed into socks and cardigans. The women dyed the wool with natural dyes, began to felt and tablecloths, carpets and artistic pictures were created.
1985 succeeded in producing the first hand-spun, hand-woven fabric, which was mainly used for lovingly designed items of clothing - only unique items.
Since 1997, the ladies of the Spinnrunde have also been processing this material into loden, which in turn is the basic material for the “Nature Park Fashion of the Mürzer Oberland”, which was created in 2005.
You can also visit and purchase the creative models made from hand-spun sheep's wool, as well as felted hats and bags, tablecloths, carpets and much more, by prior arrangement.
The largest spinning wheel in the world
The largest - almost 4 meters high - functioning spinning wheel in the world - built in 1990 from 25 different types of wood by Hermann Schrittwieser - has become a small landmark in the Kapellen district.
