About the offer

Stories about wood

Großreifling and its Silvanum. What exactly is that, you might ask? It’s an old granary, which was turned into the Austrian Forest Museum in 1979. A world of wood awaits you! After all, the wood industry has always been an essential part of the region’s economy. Just sit down in the 3D cinema and enjoy – the many stories about nature will give you plenty of food for thought.

Wood in focus

The museum is spread out over four levels, which together will take you on a journey through time! Once you’re there, it soon it becomes clear: a lot of things revolve around wood in the Gesäuse. Find out about how wood was transported and skidded from the forests or what the world of a lumberjack, rafter or charcoal burner looked like back then. Interesting fact: rafting in its original sense meant transporting logs down a river. With its skidding and rafting tours and a replica lumberjack lodge, the Silvanum is definitely worth a visit – not only in rainy weather. 3D Cinema Located on the third floor of the Forest Museum, the National Park welcomes you to its

3D Nature Cinema

After having learnt many new things about wood, the first 3D macro film in the world gives the experience a great finishing touch. Oh wait, there’s more: don’t miss out on the Clementiduck, the name might not tell you much what it is about, suffice it to say that culinary treats like the traditional Styrian Sterz, a dish made of maize flour, await you here.
