Das Kornmesserhaus am Hauptplatz

Bruck an der Mur

The Kornmesserhaus on Brucker Hauptplatz is one of the most beautiful late Gothic secular buildings in Austria.

The late-Gothic town house on the corner of Herzog-Ernst-Gasse enchants visitors with its splendidly designed facade. It was built between 1495 and 1505 for the hammer mills Pankraz Kornmeß, whose family has shaped the town of Bruck an der Mur as builders and patrons since the 14th century. The family operated extensive iron and arsenic trade.

The medieval house has six ground floor arcades made of round pillars and a magnificent loggia, which was built according to Venetian models. On the side facade you can find the remains of two late Gothic windows and wall niches and the walled-in stone Kornmeß.

The Kornmesserhaus on Koloman-Wallisch-Platz was used as the town hall of Bruck from 1622 to 1629. It was badly damaged in a city fire in 1792.

Overall, the building shows the wealth of the bourgeoisie at the time of Maximilian I and is an expression of the city's economic heyday. The Kornmesserhaus is the landmark of Bruck an der Mur. For this reason, Bruck is also known as the Kornmesserstadt.
